Panhandlers Continue at Gateway to Venice Beach, Marina del Rey, but Fewer

Panhandler

Panhandling has been declared legal in the state according to a recent ruling with the exception of major highways.  Police have clamped down on panhandlers at the Lincoln Blvd (Route 1) and end of 90 Freeway.  Also there are fewer panhandlers at Lincoln (Route 1) and Washington because of police discouragement.  All four corners have “No Soliciting” signs but panhandlers continue.

Update watched one solicitor get $2 during one stop-light change.  Panhandlers say they can’t stop soliciting and go to work because they make at least $20 per hour, according to one.  One lady with a sign at Lincoln and Washington was told there was a sign on wall behind her that said “No Soliciting.”  Her comment was: “I’m just holding a sign walking up and down the street.”

Update feels that allowing solicitation at the 90 Freeway and the Lincoln-Washington intersection is making a broad statement that the City of LA condones and welcomes panhandlers and homelessness in the area.
