Parking, Parking, Parking–Abbot Kinney

The City is seeking a local coastal development permit for two lots to be used as parking lots for Abbot Kinney.  One is at 1300 Abbot Kinney and the other is at 1600 Irving Tabor Drive.  Combined they would provide 116 parking places.

Members from the Abbot Kinney Community met to discuss the lots.  All agreed they needed more parking, that they wanted the spaces individually metered-not a pay station system, that they wanted parking behind Abbot Kinney stores metered, and that they wanted Abbot Kinney Blvd metered.  Parking lots would be restricted with parking not allowed from 2 to 6 am.

One merchant brought up the fact that parking restrictions on Abbot Kinney are on a block-by-block basis and range in restrictions from six or four hours to two hours. Department of Transportation, who attended the meeting, said that could be taken care of immediately.

Parking structures with mechanical systems were discussed.  Most wanted the two parking lots immediately and didn’t want to wait for a structure.  Leave the structure for the Venice medium many said.

The medium on Venice blvd was discussed as a possibility for parking and it was stated that it would be good for workers since, according to one merchant, they are the ones using all the free parking behind the businesses.

The lack of parking for residents near Abbot Kinney was addressed by one owner.  He said preferential parking should be tied to coastal commission approval of the parking lot.  It was stated that it was impossibility but preferential parking for residents was discussed.

A member of the Venice Neighborhood Council Land Use and Planning Committee mentioned that there was a local architectural school that was taking Venice’s parking problem on as a project.
