Gas meters are to have a facelift and become wireless.
Southern California Gas Company representative announced at the Venice Neighborhood Council meeting Tuesday that the meter would be modified and the gas company would read the meters online. Owners will be able to read their meters online also.
The dial portion shown above will replace the present dial system. It will be that simple. One will no longer have local gas reading. This, according to the representative, will take 1000 trucks off the road. The meter will have built in alerts if something happens to the system. The device is battery operated. Batteries will be used approximately two minutes per year. The gas company estimates batteries will last 20 years. “You can now lock your gate,” representative joked.
The gas company is scheduled to install the advanced device on approximately 6 million homes thru 2017. Until then, manual system will continue.
I think this is only a positive! It gives us all the opportunity to better monitor our usage and ultimately save us money.
