There is a proposed annual copper paint compliance fee to be imposed on each boat in Marina del Rey. The cost will be $1039. It doesn’t indicate whether one pays if he has complied or not. Boat owners are up in arms about such a fee. Busses are ready as well as a petition.
There will be a meeting to discuss this at the Water Quality Board Hearing at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, board room, 700 North Alameda Street, Los Angeles 90013. The Hearing to discuss such will be held at after 2 pm.
What this fee will be used for:
1. Prevent the use of any copper in bottom paint.
2. A mandatory annual copper paint compliance License for all boats in Marina del Rey Harbor that the Water Quality Board says will cost $1,039 per year per boat.
3. Remove all bottom paint from boats and replace it with an, as of yet, unproven bottom paint, at an estimated cost of $200-$400/foot.
4. Dredge the entire 402 Acre Marina del Rey Harbor to get rid of the copper that they allege is in the bottom soil at an estimated cost of $200,000,000.
