The above pictures show piles of discarded stuff. No longer needed or wanted.
Third time is a charm. The Ocean Front Walk cleanup Friday moved right along.
It started at 7 am at Navy and progressed south. Carol Sobel and her crew of homeless advocates were there along with the police, and of course, the Bureau of Sanitation workers. This time the homeless advocates, particularly Deborah LaShever and Martha, helped by explaining to homeless what they had to do to get ready for the Sanitation people. If homeless did not comply or did not understand, Officer Gill of the Los Angeles Police Department was there to aid in the explanation.
Bureau of Sanitation procedure is to remove abandoned stuff from the Ocean Front Walk area east of bike path. Abandoned stuff is bagged for trash or is bagged and tagged for storage downtown. If stuff is left on grassy area, the area, after removal of stuff, is sanitized with bleach and water. All debrs is picked up. All abandoned stuff is photographed and logged as to type and location. The nonporous areas, such as the gazebos, park benches are sanitized and then power washed.
Many areas displayed abandoned stuff ready to be removed. Homeless moved their stuff to accommodate the Sanitation crew. They seemed to be prepared this time.
One homeless man said he didn’t want any more rats or mice. Officer Gill said at OFW there was a large problem with lice and a bug that burrows under the skin. Hopefully, these cleanups will aid with some of that.
Officer Gil said that the lice is so bad at OFW that they had one man who was so covered with lice that he had lice on the outside of his shirt. The man had to be transported to the hospital. An ambulance would be quaranteed for three days if they took him. So the fire department and the police department put the man in a biohazard outfit and transported him by ambulance.
Beach cleanups will occur approximately two times a month according to the council office but so far this year, there has been only one each month.
