News of Venice, CA and Marina del Rey CA

Developers have been drooling for years over the land now occupied by the Santa Monica Airport.  A park? Does anyone really believe the park will occupy all that acreage for more than 10 years?  Once they got Venice stirred up, the airport’s days were numbered.  When the Santa Monica Airport closes, the west side becomes totally dependent on LAX for transporting anything by air.  LAX is one of the biggest targets on the west coast.  IMHO it is important for every area in Los Angeles to have a general aviation airport.  I think changing the rules to make it safer and less polluting is a wiser choice.  As far as noise – it was there before the nearby residents.  The people with the power to close the airport knew all that.

Note:This is a report of the Design Control Board (DCB) meet held 26 March in the form of a letter to the Chair of the DCB.

Good Morning Chair Phinney,
As you have probably heard, you picked a good time to play hooky from the DCB as the March Special Night Meeting was somewhat unruly with disgruntled residents.   Reluctantly, your commissioners stayed after 10PM listening to testimony from the public while the General Public Comment had to be waived and other agenda items had to be continued.  A lot of the residents were upset that they had to sit through some of the agenda that took a couple of hours before getting to the contentious project of Mariners Village.  Knowing that your April meeting has been cancelled because of “lack of new business” and those continued items will now lapse for another month, is there a better way this could be managed in the future?

As our citizens have stated on numerous occasions, night meetings are crucial for the community to weigh-in on the developments of Marina del Rey.  Since Supervisor Don Knabe has not allowed the people of MdR a Community Counsel, you have been a champion in trying to establish a better forum for input for the County residents regarding the public lands.  We would like you to continue to encourage the Department of Beaches & Harbors staff and other County agents to have night meetings in the Marina.

Would you please have your staff provide a copy of the digital presentation made by the developer representatives of Mariners Village made during your March 26, 2014 meeting?

Thanks you and your commissioners for all your efforts.

Doug Fay, former Triangle resident, Candidate for County Board of Supervisors

Note:  This is a note Fay wrote to concerned residents abutting Oxford Basin.

My father Dr. Rimmon C. Fay often asked questions about replacing pumps and devices for capacity changes when planners stated “we are just replacing old stuff with new stuff.” Often he would discover that approving a project that increases capacity would be followed months later with a new addition to the project. A new source of water directed to the basin. It’s possible. It’s happened before. I don’t trust them.

There’s no need whatsoever to increase the basin’s capacity to 16 acre feet other than to place your property in danger.

The project lawsuit has not been settled.

You asked, “Is it a flood control basin or a bird refuge/sanctuary?”

That answer is clear. It was a planned bird refuge/sanctuary. It was not a flood control facility until 1972. The County is trying to get rid of the smell that it continues to make due to poor management practices.

Please read the attachment. There is no mention of flood control in the bird refuge, or bird refuge in the flood control sections.

Did Josh tell you the County will be liable for any and all damages and losses associated with the project? Get it in writing.
I’m told flood insurance only covers acts of nature.

Note: In reference to Doug Fay being excluded from debates.

These exclusionary debates always have Kuehl and Shriver but the other 6 Supervisor candidates are not certain to be involved.  This is not democracy!

I am appalled and calling the WEST LA Democratic Club out on their exclusions!

Eric Prevent was just added.  I’ve been urging Doug to put pressure on (in a NICE, but FIRM way) to be included.  If they say he’s not viable because he’s not raising money (which is a valid point), then why do they have Pamela Conley-Ullich, who also has declared to not be raising $?

Always wondered how one would get to the grocery store with the increasing, and perhaps, impossible traffic situation coming down the road.  LA Times had article on Instacart shopping and delivery service.  Is Instacart an answer? Instacart shops for you at Whole Foods and delivers within two-hours for $3.99; one hour, $14.99.  If one belongs to Amazon Prime, which costs $99 per year, delivery fees are waived with purchases of $35 or more.  And the world turns.

For those with commercial garbage bins–businesses and large apartments … Just curious, does dividing LA into eleven garbage districts and assigning only one garbage pickup service to each district make sense?  Sounds like a setup for a union-served garbage system.  (Note that this does not affect the City house-to-house pickup.)  Do you remember strikes in New York with garbage piled sky high?  Sounds like many little companies will go by the way side along with the free enterprise system.  Of course, costs will go up without competition.  This is somewhere in the City system to be approved.  Might be time to contact your council representative at Mike.Bonin@lacity.org.
