I want to comment on your item on short term rentals.  You ask the question “would I want to live next to a property used as a short term rental (STR).”  I do live next to such a property; actually next to eight such properties.  There are two original 1915 cottages next to my house used as short term rentals, one remodeled studio/house across the street with a huge yard used over several years as a short term (and occasionally multiple-month) rental, a large three bedroom Craftsman that cycled from STR to furnished year-long lease and back to STR, the three Eco Cottages down the block that were featured in the Argonaut story on the subject of STRs, and one studio apartment around the corner from me that has been rented as an STR for over eight years.  I have never had any complaint about any of the visitors renting any of these properties.  I became friends with a woman from South Africa, by way of Britain and France, who stayed for three months in one of the cottages next to my house.

The major issue I have is with a long-term renter living just next to the cottages west of me who has large, late and loud parties for his entertainment industry friends that go to 2:00 AM.

As a long time defender of Venice residents from the obnoxious presence of those living  on our streets in RVs, campers and other motor vehicles I find the issue with STRs is not the use but rather the occasional rude and inconsiderate behavior of a  small minority of these visitors and the lack of a mechanism to stop this behavior and, if necessary, deny the property owner the right to continue to rent their property to those who would prevent the adjoining neighbors from the quiet enjoyment of their homes.  Some type of permit system is in order to both regulate these uses while also allowing neighbors to ask the City to revoke permits in instances when property owners do not exercise a modicum of control over their vacation renters.

I believe CNC stands for Certified Neighborhood Council.  Update in last issue referred to CNC as community neighborhood councils. This apparently was an error.

I passed out about 30 Neighborhood Watch forms for them to add names of surrounding neighbors and other important persons to contact.  As yet I have received no replies from my surrounding neighbors.

Saturday, I was verbally and physically attacked by a stranger who was deranged and high on drugs.  She threatened my life at the corner of Harbor Crossing Lane and Admiralty.  I called 911 at 6:13pm from my cell phone and gave the dispatcher my location, a description of my attacker, and of myself.  I was told someone would come immediately to protect me while my attacker was threatening to shoot me. When no one showed, neither LAPD nor the Sheriff, I called 911 again at 6:21 pm.  At that time, they switched back and force between Sheriff’s department and LAPD with them arguing that it was NOT their jurisdiction.    NO ONE showed up to help. If not for the kind help of neighbors, I would be severely hurt or dead. Can someone please make any sense of the attitude, behavior, and lack of action of those who swore to protect us? This tells me something very troubling.  Part of my Neighborhood is no man’s land.   If anything happens to any one of us, good luck you are on your own. Criminals can do to you what they please.  The POLICE will do NOTHING as they don’t bother even to show up.  Since it’s no one’s jurisdiction, why should they show up.  This was attitude from both Sheriff and LAPD.

Interesting article in Wall Street Journal 3 October indicating that cell phone antennas are not as safe as indicated.

Argonaut carried article by Roxanne Brown regarding Mayor Garcetti’s “great streets” program.   She relates the program to Abbot Kinney Blvd and indicates that that is not working out too well.
