Fire at Extra Space Storage, 658 Venice Blvd, just east of Abbot Kinney, is supposedly out. Firemen want to make sure, so a crew will remain at scene for couple of days.
The main part of the fire, which started just before 8 pm Saturday, was upstairs, east of the stairwell. But, according to members of the fire crew, there was water damage throughout. Water seeped under the metal doors so everything up to about two inches had water damage.
“A fire of this kind,” needs to be watched said fireman Mike Henry. “Normally, we remove everything from the fire scene and take it outside to make sure nothing will continue to burn. There is so much stuff inside and a stairwell that, doing what is normally done, is not practical, so we will watch and make sure.”
Sunday firemen were cleaning up water and debris. Around noon Sunday, the third shift of firemen were finishing and getting ready to leave. Arson squad was on the scene to investigate.
Tom Elliott made the comment that the halls all had cameras. Yolanda Gonzalez said that Rick, manager of Extra Storage, got the camera dvd/computer out of the facility as soon as it was possible.
Present at the scene were many people who had belongings in the storage facility. Amy Abrams was heartbroken about possible damage to one-of-a-kind photo album. Many at the scene spoke of stored artwork and photos.
LA Times article said eight firemen were injured and five hospitalized.
