Note: This is one of Update’s all time favorites regarding the rules for bikers and skateboarders. Left it out of 20 April issue by mistake.
This is my procedure for skateboarders on sidewalks. My dog can hear them if they are coming in back of us. No matter if they are in front or back, I put up my right hand and say, “please stop” three times. If they continue, I raise my voice and yell, “stop” until they do, at which time I thank them for stopping. If they don’t stop, I release my dog’s leash a bit and he will lunge at them as they are passing. I still have control and would never allow my dog to harm anyone. But, it is frightening for the skateboarders. I yell after them “learn how to ride a skateboard”. One guy told me he knows people who can train dogs to not be bothered by skateboards. How self-entitled is that?

Note: This is another comment that was left out of 20 April issue and is in regard to rules for skateboarders and bikers.
YAY for revisiting the issues surrounding the ever-increasing lawlessness of skateboarders and bicyclists who want the road shared with them but do not wish to reciprocate nor follow the laws.
BOO on Mike Bonin’s decision to go against the will of the people who are against the small lot subdivision at 758 Sunset. Yes, Venice is teetering on the brink of being ruined and to discover that your elected representative supports more bad development and not residents who oppose the project is certainly disturbing. Of even greater concern here is his move to circumvent the West LA Area Planning Commission who denied the project. Makes me wonder if the voices of the people matter anymore.

Supervisor David Campos has competing legislation in SF, which comes down far harder on Airbnb, capping all rentals at 90 days a year, and imposing $1,000-a-day fines on companies that showcase renters who haven’t registered with the city.http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/2-supervisors-want-to-tighten-up-law-regulating-6153957.php.
Santa Monica has now proposed STR legislation: http://smdp.com/council-seeks-regulate-airbnb-vrbo/147337 that will be presented to the SM City Council next Tuesday. It looks like this ordinance will legalize, via license, STRs in residential neighborhoods. Although the SM Mayor has said: “What this would prevent is the conversion of existing housing stock in our city to de facto hotel rooms,” – See more at: http://smdp.com/council-seeks-regulate-airbnb-vrbo/147337#sthash.ceMD8kXr.dpuf It looks like the ordinance, as proposed, does NOT protect rental housing stock.
This is definitely a work in progress. The proposed ordinance in SM is similar to NYC laws. They have been in litigation with AirBnB to turn over addresses for years. And it hasn’t happened – and there are more there now then ever before. So, this will be a battle.
It’s not clear what they will do about entire RSO protected apartment buildings located in commercial zones or how they will enforce the so called exempted ‘truly individual transactions.”

I like the links. it’s great to have a source of further info to go to. (Per Ryavec’s piece, I especially feel for people who live by the beach now — in apartments and homes, that is. Thanks to what I perceive as a lackadaisical attitude about the pretty scary meth heads lounging on the streets there, it seems downright dangerous to walk around there — or live there — compared to when I lived there back in the 90s, about four buildings from Speedway.

I was wondering if anyone has an update on the Oxford basin!
I have not seen any work done as of late!
Tarp on the fence has come undone and blowing in the wind!
No maintenance worker around!
Just curious what’s going on. If anything!

This is the note to my neighbors, who, appallingly, gave my phone number to the abusive cops who came to my door like it was a SWAT raid on an escaped felon — though what had actually happened was that I’d caught a woman hitting my parked car. Her insurance company just notified me that they’re sending me a check for the damage she did.
It was disturbing to find that you gave out my phone numbers to the police without my permission, enabling their absolutely thuggish and uncalled-for behavior when they were trying to violate my civil liberties after I caught a woman slamming into my parked car.
Yes, I was the victim here. Mercury Insurance just called me to tell me they’re sending me a check for the damage she did to my vehicle.
The cops’ sergeant was horrified at their absolutely unwarranted behavior. They’ve been reported to Internal Affairs. I suspect these cops saw an opportunity to go after the lady who complains about the noise laws not being enforced on the Brig. Yes, I do all the work on that and my “neighbors” help the police in their abusive treatment when I’m actually the victim of a careless (and perhaps somewhat drunk) driver.
No, I actually did nothing wrong under the law. She didn’t request my information after she hit my car. She probably called Daddy afterward and he told her she should have gotten it. Well, the vehicle code says that the license/insurance info of the person who owns property (or a parked car) damaged by other motorists “shall” be given “upon request.” Since she didn’t “request” it, I didn’t provide it. And, really, why would she actually need it? I had to call her insurance company to get payment for the damage she did to my vehicle, not the other way around.
I’m proud that I knew my rights, held my ground, and did not come out or allow them in without a search warrant. Especially considering that I had done nothing wrong, yet had abusive cops treating me like an escaped, heavily armed felon. Bizarre and wrong.
Our civil liberties are increasingly imperiled now in this country and it is always disturbing to see citizens quick to assume the role of quislings in enabling this. Shameful.
Please slip my keys under my door.
