Wellers Back in Business of Placing Homeless

Chaplains Steven & Regina Weller_edited-1
Regina and Steve Weller, the LAPD chaplains for the LAPD Homeless Task Force, are back in the business of helping the homeless get off the street permanently. Funds precluded helping at the end of December.

They placed 202 homeless people in housing last year. They had to stop because of lack of funds.

Barbara Gibson’s check early in January, followed by Carl Lambert’s check, put them back in business. No organization in Venice tops their record for placing homeless.

Regina said last year that it costs approximately $591 to place someone in a home and approximately $250 to send one home. If you wish to be part of this homeless-to-home effort, contribute to Foursquare Chaplains, 1400 Riviera Avenue, Venice, CA 90291

  1. There are compassionate homeowners that rent rooms in other parts of Los Angeles open to the handicapped, the disenfranchised, homeless, etc, for $550 per month which includes utilities. Lots of Venice Homeless receive government benefits and can pay this affordable rent. It beats the streets and jails is cheaper than motels. We pay the first months rent for them to help them get situated and guide them into safety and betterment. We provide hygiene kits, towels, and linens, and provide a few days meals and also the transportation over.
I have found there’s too many complainers in this world and not enough good will to mankind. Bangladesh? What good does your flippant remark do for anyone? It’s not cute or kind, nor gives hope to anyone. Chaplain Regina Weller

Yes, that is the average price. Price for room (shared) went from $500 to $550 first of January. These people can stay there as long as they want or need to in order to get on their feet. Many of the people qualify for assistance and the assistance kicks in after the initial month. Some do not know how to fill out the assistance paperwork. Some are already on assistance but just do not know how to go about getting off the streets. No one qualifies for one of these rooms who is on alcohol or drugs. They must be detoxed before. I am doing a story to show how the latest homeless tally which might help explain more for you.
People provide these homes (2 to a room) which are supervised with professionals throughout the City. Hope this answers your questions.
