Silhouetted in the center is the statue of the Third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson and the Founding Father credited with being the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. Independence was declared 4 July 1776. Former President Thomas Jefferson died early in the morning on the 50th anniversary of 4 July. The Second President of the United States John Adams died hours later on the 50th anniversary.
This is one of the four marble epithets in the Thomas Jefferson Memorial rotunda.
