O’Kane worked for the old Los Angeles Free Press and lived near the Ocean Front Walk at 7 Windward where he met the “beat” of the 50’s and 60’s and frequented the coffee houses that were once the mainstay of Venice.
He writes of Venice, second to San Francisco, during the “hippy” movement. He states that there were only about 50 true talents and the rest were poseurs and faux beats. He talks of the gentrification, the true artists of Venice of old, the conflicts, and the “citystate of Venice.”
