Venice News Updates

News of Venice, CA and Marina del Rey CA

Nancy P of Oxford … I was wondering if I could reach out to our awesome community by way of Update; I am looking for information on local ordinances. Especially those which regulate running a business (which draws additional traffic to the neighborhood) from home or out of your garage and an ordinance which regulates how long a car engine may run without interruption in a stationary position.  Does that make sense?  Or if someone has an amazing attorney who would consult with me on this situation, that too would be helpful.Sonjia G of Yale …Ref Darlene Davis’ submittal of people in Spain who mail dog poop back.Perhaps it’s time for a poopiecam….  caught in the act!

Barbara B president of Westwood South-of-Santa-Monica-Blvd Homeowners Assn and activist …Correspondence sent to the City Clerk’s office for inclusion in the Council File record should be sent to interim clerk Holly Wolcott at holly.wolcott@lacity.org.  June Lagmay has retired after 32 years.  For urgent City Clerk business, contact Anna Martinez at 213-978-1020.

Sevan G of Venice Neighborhood Council …I just wanted to clarify something in response to one part of the Update.

I have copied the part in question below.

–Methamphetamines

Gerard reported that first and foremost for the committee was getting rid of methanphamines.  The guy in the car was on “meth,” he said. —

I did state that there had been discussion and rumors of the driver being on meth, but that without official confirmation it was just rumor. I did not try to or intend to allege that he actually was on meth. The reason I brought up methamphetamine as a priority for public safety is because the subject was repetitively mentioned by the community and was something we needed to focus on as a public health and safety priority. The rumor catalyzed a discussion on the subject. I just want to clarify that I was not dispelling an allegation that he actually was on methamphetamine, but rather acknowledging the rumor and reminding the community that without any official confirmation it is nothing more than rumor.

Barbara B president of Westwood South-of-Santa-Monica-Blvd Homeowners Assn and activist …Directed by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog, From One Second to the Next is a documentary-style PSA in AT&T’s “It Can Wait” campaign. The film is a sobering look at the consequences of texting and driving. It features the heart-wrenching stories of the victims of these accidents, as well as interviews with some of the drivers who caused the tragedies. At almost 35 minutes, it’s much longer than your typical viral video, yet it’s an extremely compelling and effective way to get the point across.
Our society raises millions and millions of dollars and dedicates significant effort to find cures for diseases that cause deaths that cannot be prevented.  Injuries and deaths from texting (and phoning) while driving can be prevented.  It will not require scientific research and years of study.  It requires common sense and the understanding that some rules are indeed good for EVERYONE to follow –without exception.  We all need to set the example and we need to remind others that a split second is all it takes….  This film is one way of showing what is possible in the split of a second.Amy A of Abbot Kinney area …We on Electric Avenue will never be able to park near our homes again. Despite Mark Ryavec’s valiant effort to try to get us permit parking, the coastal commission thinks it’s okay to just screw the residents while Gjelina restaurant (still violating codes with the city doing NOTHING about it) gets carte blanche to bring in HUNDREDS of cars a night while providing zero parking and while we have drunk jerks from The Brig parking in front of our houses and waking us up at 1 and 2 a.m.

I bet those city engineers and Coastal Commission appointees who keep denying us permit parking get to park safely somewhere near their homes. We are a mile from the beach. Nobody parks here to go to the beach. How rotten that we are just screwed because we are renters and can’t afford to bring some suit against the city and Coastal Commission.

It’s gotten to the point where I am a prisoner in my house and can’t go anywhere by car, even to drive quickly to the grocery store or drugstore, if I need to come home and can’t allow for 20 or more minutes to find parking.

Well, on the bright side, I guess this’ll stop a disgusting behavior I see with frequency: The Brig’s valet taking money to park cars at their building at 1515 and then parking them in the city lot — taking parking that is supposed to be free.

This is utterly disgusting.

Reta M of Triangle …There are three marijuana shops on Washington Blvd, south side, between Oxford and Marr.
