Second Beach Cleanup, Last Friday

The second beach cleanup started last Friday at Navy and progressed southward to Washington. This time Carol Sobol, her legal group, and friends Peggy Kennedy, and Deborah Lashever aided all.

The Sobol group stated that they weren’t notified and they hadn’t attended the first cleanup either. Update asked if there was a notification request list. Deborah Lashever asked how Update knew. Update explained that the notices were posted all over OFW more than 72 hours ago when only 48 were required. It was in the Update 5 February. Lashever said her internet service is sketchy right now. Lashever also mentioned her group counted only three notices from Windward Circle to Rose.

The time required to do the job increased as the Sobol group tried to aid the Biohazard group and the police. Confusion for workers and homeless occurred when this happened.

Explanation of what homeless should do would have been better served days before by the homeless advocates. At the time, it was confusing to the homeless. Supposedly, there are other groups who come prior to cleanup to provide them information-rehab, shelters, etc.

a street cleanup
Dissention and confusion seemed to be the aim of the game this time. Update was explaining to one homeless vendor, who asked, what the Warn, Bag, Tag, Store program was and how it would benefit all. Peggy Kennedy came up to the vendor and said “Don’t talk to Update; Update (representative) is not one of us.” Of course, Update is not one of them in that respect. Update has read the First Amendment. Update believes in First Amendment rights for all, not just those with an agenda.
a argument
One verbal yelling bash took place between the snake charmer (on left with his clothes on) and a vendor. Whether discussion was regarding cleanup or not is not known.

Posted Notice stated:
Please remove all personal belongings, including bulky items from sidewalks, alleys, parks, and public access areas. All property remaining will be removed by the City. Property left behind, except for items that pose an immediate threat to public health or safety, trash, and evidence of a crime or contraband, will be collected by the City and kept in a secure location for a period of 90 days during which time it may be retrieved by its rightful owner.

a catching up
One young man got upset because his stuff, which was stacked on grass and abandoned, was being tagged for storage. He arrived later and was busy getting it out of the tapped off area. He understood when the police explained to him what was happening.

Update suggests for the sake of time, which equates to big bucks, that the homeless do this cleanup themselves orchestrated by and under direction of Carol Sobol with the aid of and to the satisfaction of the biohazard group. Am sure Sobol can demonstrate leadership among her homeless friends at the beach and they will respond in a positive manner to make this a more workable, livable situation, twice a month for a couple of hours. She obviously has the time.

This is not meant to appear in a deragotory way. Sobol obviously has an affinity with the homeless and they with her. Believe this is a workable situation for this project.

All must keep in mind that this City Park is not a “my” park; it is not a “homeless” park. It is a “public” park.
