One of the original land marks on Abbot Kinney is in the process of being renovated. Developer is not changing the footprint or the height, so developer only needs permits. This means he does not need to go thru vetting process of the Venice Neighborhood Council to do what he is doing.
Fortunately, it looks like he is not going to reproduce the rendering shown above but appears to be making the antique bas-relief white tile column facade into columns and recessing the stores. It is believed that neighbors on Abbot Kinney asked the developer not to remove the antique white tiles.
