I think that trash bins would help the trash problem on 3rd Street. Most folks will put their trash into bins if the bins are placed in fairly convenient locations. Looks like this location would require more than one bin. Surely that would be better than trash on the sidewalk and the street.

The link is to a group leading the fight to require disclosure of sponsors of ballot measure campaigns in campaign advertising. This is a very important effort. Please consider lending your support.

We had a great turnout at the Zoning Meeting last Thursday. We presented over 250 signed petitions (gathered in 1 week), over 20 letters and approximately 15 people spoke in opposition. We were well prepared and the community outcry was heard. We also received support from the LUCP Chair Robin Rudisill & Council Office Representative Chris Robertson.

The result: The case was continued to give AT&T more time to work out a design plan with the community. They will be presenting at the LUPC meeting and then to the VNC (dates below). Yes, this could be considered frustrating since AT&T has had 2 years to adequately prepare (and since they didn’t show up for the last 2 community meetings) but that’s a reflection on them. Let’s stay the course and demonstrate our commitment.

Gjelina in my neighborhood was given conditions — by the Zoning Board! — and they broke and continue to break many of them. They were zoned for 60 people. They ignored that and seat hundreds of people several times at the lunch and dinner hours. They provide ZERO parking for these customers. I no longer can use my car because if I do, I could end up driving around for 40 minutes looking for a space. My mail (I’m a newspaper columnist) doesn’t get picked up from my box in Santa Monica and last night, I needed to go get something for my dog and I walked for 40 minutes to get it rather than drive there (quickly — a 10 minute errand, door to door) because I couldn’t afford to drive around angrily, wasting gas, for a half hour or more afterward.

It is so, so unethical for a business to use the antiquated zoning of Venice (like grandfathering) and not provide the basics to serve their customers in a business, like parking, and instead take residential parking and make residential life a nightmare.

I have tried for years to get permit parking from the appointed royalty at the Coastal Commission. These Long Beach-dwellers insist that my Venice neighborhood, East of Abbot Kinney, is beach parking. Um, maybe on a hot 4th of July. But probably not. The rest of the year, we suffer the likes of Gjelina taking our parking as well as The Brig customers’.

I feel Robin Rudisill is a real positive change for LUPC and I see that the rights and issues of residents will no longer be shoved aside.

Paris has banned and is cracking down on vacation rentals/short-term rentals. Paris joins Barcelona in Europe. “We can’t have entire neighborhoods or buildings turned into tourist homes,” said Ian Brossat, Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s housing adviser.

The report for 320 Sunset at the LUPC meet should have stated that “Curb in front of premises would not be used as a loading zone or as parking for the exclusive use of the restaurant or as a valet stop. The word “not” was left out which completely changes the meaning.

Ilana Marosi emailed that we should not forget that this property is changing use from office to whatever it is that will be approved.

Background for this property. The property is zoned M-1. Originally, the applicant wanted a bakery with retail sales and during the planning process changed it to bakery with retail and a restaurant with a full line of alcohol for onsite and for offsite sale of beer and wine. The hearing for such was held 13 March of this year and was left open. The hearing administrator admonished the applicant for changing his mind during the process and for not having gone thru the neighborhood council process. Since that time the applicant has had a community outreach and went thru the LUPC 1 August. (And yes, it did go thru LUPC before but was “bounced” by VNC and returned to LUPC just recently.) The project will be heard at the VNC meet 19 August. Next step will be planning.
