Response Story

Venice Update devoted the 20 August issue to conditions at corner of Washington & Lincoln. Captain Nicole Alberca responded immediately upon receipt of copy. Senior Lead Officer Gregg Jacobus responded to one resident who sent article to several police officers. Photos above show situation each day since. It does take time for homeless to know this isn’t the place. (See Comments.)

Captain Nicole Alberca said “Thank you for reaching out, without the community we will not be successful. We will continue to address this important quality of life matter. Please let me know if the situation does not improve.”

One resident was “unnerved” by the pictures and sent all the officials at Pacific Division a copy of Update. This person had lived on Carter and moved her family to another area in Triangle because of this condition. Here is what she wrote:

I live on another street in Triangle now and have worked in Culver City for 15 years. I previously resided on Carter Avenue directly behind the Walgreens. I moved my family because of the homeless issue.

In the past, I have logged countless calls to your pacific division in the interest of preventing public drinking and drug use in our neighborhood. As you are aware, it is illegal to drink in public and certainly do illegal drugs in public.

I am writing to plead with your department to do something to permanently prevent this from happening. I’d like to know as a taxpayer what is being done to prevent criminal activity currently. Being asked to move on is not a deterrent in my humble opine. I hope you take the time to read or at least skim the below photos.

Tell me what I can do as a citizen to help. I implore you to consider how your own family would feel walking past these conditions to go pick up some cough syrup for your sick child and have to worry about being shaken down or much worse harmed in some way. This may seem trite in the scheme of what you deal with on a daily basis and we appreciate all your team does to protect us each and every day and the sacrifices you make for us and your own loved ones.

I had to send this email because I personally saw someone shoot up on Thatcher and I cringe at the thought of that happening in front of a child and all the unsafe behavior that goes along with it. Thanks for your time. I look forward to your response.

She received a comment from Gregg Jacobus, the local senior lead officer, which read:

Thank you for the email. I have concentrated my extra patrol efforts in this area and will continue to do so. Also please notify the police by calling the non-emergency line at 877-ASK-LAPD when you see anyone loitering, drinking in public or doing drugs so we can have a unit respond and contact these individuals.

Sounds like people on Carter, and not all have been contacted, adjust to situation or move. One house is for sale and a neighbor said it was because of the homeless. Owners have two pre-school children.
