Keep Neighborhoods First Claims First Victory

Keep Neighborhoods First claims a Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) committee victory.

“The power and numbers of our articulate attendees shook the Airbnb assurance that it can win our city,” said one spokesman.

As a result of the hearing, the Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) committee will initiate public hearings across Los Angeles to determine how our city should regulate STRs.

“Commercial short-term rental operators and the platforms that facilitate their work will revise their strategies, and attempt to halt our momentum. We must continue to show up, and we must be ready for them,” said a spokesperson.

“Here are three things you can do to keep the momentum going:

    1) Share the KNF website and facebook with your friends and family. Have them sign up for our emails. We need to keep gathering allies all over the city.

    2) Keep coming to actions and public hearings. As we demonstrated today, each person makes a tremendous difference. A single compelling story can change everything.

    3) Support Keep Neighborhoods First with a donation. In order to prolong and expand our organizing efforts against a twenty-billion dollar opposition, we’re gonna need some dedicated resources. We need your help to keep the lights on, the information flowing, and our incredible volunteers organized. Please consider chipping in if you can!”

PLUM to Hear Short-Term Rental Motion

The motion made by Councilmen Herb Wesson and Mike Bonin regarding the regulation of short-term rentals will be discussed at the Planning & Land Use Management (PLUM) committee of the City Council Tuesday (25 August), 2:30 pm, City Hall, 200 N. Spring St, LA 90012.

The motion proposes to allow for someone to share their home while prohibiting rogue hotels and halting a frightening loss of rental housing caused by the abuse of short-term rentals. You can read motion here.

Tricia Keane, director of Land use and Planning for the Council Office, mad the statement:

The loss of affordable housing is critical, and we recognize that the City must act now to protect neighborhoods from the negative impacts of short-term rentals. We don’t want to take away someone’s ability to make ends meet by renting out an extra room or guest house, but we also cannot tolerate how a growing number of speculators are eliminating rental housing and threatening the character of our neighborhoods.

Keep Neighborhoods First Wants Your Experiences

Keep Neighborhoods First wants you to write city hall about your short-term rental story. City Hall will begin process of making laws for short-term rentals. Keep Neighborhood First is looking for a strong, enforceable law, not one like San Francisco.

They want your story. They have a sample letter to download and the place to send it is: action@keepneighborhoodsfirst.com.

150 Protest AirBnB

Over 150 neighbors from across Los Angeles came together to make their voices heard. We had songs, we had speakers, we had chants, we had camaraderie, and we had their attention: the press came out in force, and even some commercial short-term rental operators showed up.

We asked the City for protection, and now it’s time to follow up on that request. In the coming month, we want you to join us as we write letters, attend hearings, and take this message right to City Hall. For now, take a moment to celebrate this successful event that you helped make happen. Tag yourself in the gallery below and share it far and wide!

Pets Get in AirBnB Act

By Keep Neighborhoods First
Even pets are taking part in the “sharing economy!”

Now you can rent a room at The Ellison, a rent-controlled historic apartment building in Venice, California for just $200 a night thanks to an up-and-coming dog/Airbnb entrepreneur.

It seems that “Maralee,” the dachshund responsible for the illegal listing below, figured out she could make more money from vacationers than long-term tenants.

What does she care if other dogs can’t find affordable housing? Now she can buy more biscuits. We’ve seen how hesitant the City has been to prosecute humans for such unlawful behavior…will it ignore commercial canine operations, too?
