Babies Are Safe!

Herons

The good news is that the young Heron are safe, as of today, thanks to an unbelievable effort of Lina Shanklin and her group of 14, who stood vigil with a net under trees filled with young Heron at Mariners Village, as the MDR Fireworks fired Saturday night.

The Mom and Dad Herons get frightened by the noise and fly away never to return. That leaves babies too young to fly, six stories up in nests, frightened by the noise and later hungry, looking for food.

Shanklin’s plea for help was published in the VeniceUpdate.com before the Fourth of July at https://veniceupdate.com/2015/07/01/help-save-the-herons-at-mariners-village-on-the-fourth-during-fireworks/ .

Help Save the Herons at Mariners Village on the Fourth during Fireworks

Herons

Lina Shanklin of Mariners Village has put out a call for help to save the Herons during the Fourth of July fireworks in Marina del Rey. She needs people and supplies.

“On July 4th from 8:30 to 9:30 pm Mariners Village baby Herons need 20 minutes of our time so they don’t fall six stories to the ground and to certain death or maiming,” she wrote. “Your hands along with eight others can make a difference.”

A little history …
During April’s MDR Birthday fireworks, allL the adult Herons nesting in the trees inside Mariners Village flew up in a panic with each display and loud noise, leaving nests behind.

The MDR 4th of July Fireworks this Saturday night is even nearer.

It’s more than likely our last 2 Heron babies who can perch on the edge of their nest will jump. Without the ability to glide or fly yet, they will plummet to the ground 6 stories below, maimed or dying.

Could you celebrate part of your Saturday 4th of July evening by foregoing the Fireworks display and instead….spend one hour doing something great?!

…be willing to be a part of an all-volunteer Heron rescue team holding an edge of a net or tarp to catch and save a falling baby Heron? No experience necessary! Just your hands and your care and showing up.
