Plumbers Donate Time for Post Office Beautification Project

A crew of plumbers from Roy Smith Plumbing of Mar Vista donated their time at the Venice Post Office to fix the 28-year-old irrigation system that was installed to water the newly planted Italian Stone Pines and bougainvillea.

A new pine has been installed where one died and planter boxes with succulents have been installed surrounding the property. Neighbors have contributed time and money to have this project accomplished.

“Apparently many years ago a vehicle broke a riser with a spigot on top on the east side of the main driveway into the PO from Grand,” wrote Mark Ryavec. So, the system constantly leaked. Since no one from the neighborhood was then watering either the Pines, the bougainvillea, or the cactus in the garden near the traffic circle, the manager at the post office just had the pipe cut underground and the water feed from the post office capped. With the planters now installed we need easier access to water.

“The plumbing crew excavated the broken pipe and the one that had been cut and are in the process of fixing both.

“They also will install spigots with special keys at several points around the perimeter of the PO’s parking lot (splicing into the same water line installed by Jim Murez and neighbors) that will be controlled by a turn-on at the southwest corner of the PO building.

“So, we will not have to stretch hoses for 200 or 300 feet, but will be able to attach a shorter hose to one of the spigots, turn it on with the key (and turn on the system at the corner of the building) and water the plants. And it will be easy to move the hoses out to the sidewalk with one of the hose caddies.”

Beautification plan for area around post office was successful

A group of neighbors got together after “repeated late night and very early morning noise, frequent loud profanities, threats of firebombing of residents’ homes, frequent attempted break-ins and frequent thefts of items from residents’ yards,” according to the group. So they decided to beautify the area. They installed a couple planter boxes and then a brick was thrown thru one neighbor’s front window. The resolve doubled and more boxes were installed.

Clean Up Venice Post Office

Pictures were taken Monday (19 Jan) after supposed cleaning on Saturday. The area photographed is the area near where customers enter and exit.

David Ritch felt the Venice Post Office was deplorable so he wrote the US Post Office to see what they could do about cleaning it up. The grounds were to have been cleaned up Saturday, 17 January. Photos were taken following Monday, 19 January. There is still debris where customers enter and exit.

Phone numbers are given here so that residents can continue to call until the grounds are landscaped and cleaned.

“The problem with all the promises is that the people in charge change on a weekly basis. So if Joe Blow says one thing one week, it might not be true the next week according to my mail carrier,” said Reta Moser.

Dennis Hathaway started the cleanup in January of 2014. He got a similar letter to the one David Ritch got stating that they were upset and would take care of such. Call the supervisor at 310-314-4024 or post office consumer affairs at 323-586-7409. Each letter had different names heading the offices.

Linda Lucks then president of the Venice Neighborhood Council got into the cleanup of the post office and contacted the Postal Regulatory Commission.

David’s letter is more encouraging in that the supervisor is committed to keeping the landscape groomed and removing all trash, the latter as of Saturday. This time they plan to have a “frequent review” to make sure things stay cleaned. “A work order has been submitted to our Maintenance Department for assistance with the upkeep and the initial cleanup,” according to letter.

The landscaping has yet to commence. The truck storage area grounds seemed to be cleaned but corners where customers come and go lacked curb appeal.

Hathaway Says Annex Needs Cleaning

Post Office Annex Trash

Dennis Hathaway, of Penmar area,  sent the above photo with comments about how “unkept” the Venice Post Office Annex on Windward at the old Safeway complex had become.

Update checked out the post office and found the grounds to be beyond “litter” and talked with the postmaster.  They change postmasters once a week or once a month.  Pressure got one postmaster to clean up the perimeter and trim some of the sticky bushes last year when they had the encampment fire.

But the littler inside the grounds is so bad it could be called a fire hazard.  Outside perimeter was not too bad.  Bushes need trimming again and a box of bottles need to be removed but compared with the inside, it is clean.

“There can be no excuse for not cleaning up inside the fence, Hathaway wrote.  “The property is right in the middle of Venice and is an eyesore and whoever’s responsible should feel ashamed for not taking a little time to clean it up.

“Some might say the litter outside the fence is beyond post office control, but I find trash dropped on the sidewalk and parkway in front of my house from time to time and I feel a definite responsibility to clean it up.”

Postmaster said someone was coming to restripe the parking lot and at that time they would clean it up.  He was asked if it would be before March.  He said he didn’t know.

Venice residents, complain to the postmaster.  Complain to anyone who will listen at the counter.

How Clean It Is

How clean it is

Venice Post Office sidewalk is a pleasure to look at.  No litter.  Sunday night the bus stop (to left of photo) looks littered, but all in all, the site is consistently so much cleaner than it has been for years.
