Jody Moroni Sausage Kingdom, Robbed

a. Jody Moroni
The original Jody Moroni’s famous Sausage Kingdom on Ocean Front Walk was robbed 31 August.

Jordan Monkarsh has spread his sausage cuisine to other restaurants bearing his Jody Moroni name in California, Nevada, and Arizona in the 35 years that he has been at Venice Beach, yet this is his first time to have such a “serious break-in and burglary” at his Ocean Front Walk place.

One resident when told of the burglary said “Jody Moroni’s sausage is to Venice’s Ocean Front Walk what apple pie is to America.”

“We had a serious break-in and burglary on Sunday night, August 31,” wrote Jordan Monkarsh, owner of Jody Moroni’s at the beach. “Been here for 35 years and have never had a forced entry before.

“They came in via Speedway, climbed over the fence, and broke a six-foot, metal rollup door. They ransacked the office and carried out the safe and two registers. Just such a violation. Takes time to get new registers and set them up.”

Perhaps, the City should consider cameras on the Speedway as well as the Ocean Front Walk. Monkarsh did say that he will be installing cameras in the back.

Around Ocean Front Walk

a. white line
Ocean front walk white-line law seems to have been crossed. Vendors are not supposed to displays beyond the white line. It is impossible to have emergency respond team vehicles traverse the “walk” with displays in the way.

a. encampment
Homeless are still nestled in near the skateboard park.

Sand erosion is being addressed at the beach park at Windward.

Bike Lane Helps Here

aj. bike lane
Bike lane defines how to handle crossing Pacific when on a bike. Before bikers waited for light at corner on far right, interrupting flow of traffic for vehicles that were making a right-hand turn. Very dangerous. The line stops at Pacific but certainly helps at that intersection. Photo was taken at 8:30 am Saturday.

Venice Memorial for Jay Adams Draws Hundreds

aj. jay adams
Mr. Skateboard was memorialized Saturday morning at the Venice Pier at end of Washington Blvd. Three to four hundred gathered to honor the memory of Jay Adams.

Jay Adams did it his way and they watched, learned, and followed as he made skateboard history. He grew up with it and made it grow with him. He took skateboarding from the streets to international competition.

He was Venice’s Mr. Skateboard, a legend.

Oops Again!

c. car.

Monday (25 Aug) 5:30 am car turns over on Admiralty and gets stopped by fence. Lady driver was unhurt. Second accident in last few months hitting the Oxford Retention Basin fence.

Party’s Over!

c. cart.
About five fellows were drinking on the sidewalk on Carter across from Walgreens and near cart. Think police asked them to leave, and in retaliation, they dumped over the cart filled with garbage.

Drive-Up (not drive in) Car Repair

(Photo courtesy of Brennan Lindner.) How many times does one see this repeated in a neighborhood? It is against the law. Lindner sent seven photos showing service on the street. This photo shows them being worked on in street, waiting for work unattended, and driving in for service. Looks like street repair.

Here’s fun happenings on Garfield Ave at  A Step Above Auto Repair. They’ve been slowly taking over the street.  I’ve asked the owner to repair vehicles in his shop. He basically said “sure,” but of course, nothing has changed.   All we want is a half decent looking street, not cars getting torn apart on the street and leaking oil/gunk on the street/sidewalk…

Are rules so hard to follow?

SEC. 85.01   REPAIRING VEHICLES ON STREETS.
(Amended by Ord. No. 168,782, Eff. 7/12/93.)

(a) No person shall dismantle, repair, or make any repairs, or add or install any part or accessory, to or on any vehicle, machine, motor, appliance or other device, while the same is upon any public or private highway, street, alley way or similar place.

(b) No person shall park any vehicle for the purpose of making repairs while the same is upon any public or private highway, street, alley way or similar place.

(c) The provisions of this section shall not be deemed to prohibit the driver of any vehicle, which is disabled while upon any public or private highway, street, alley way or similar place to such extent that it is impossible to avoid stopping, from making, or causing to be made, the repairs necessary to enable such vehicle to be moved from the public or private highway, street, alley way or similar place.

Oh Nice!–Not for Dogs Off Leash

aa. park

Great park area. But not for dogs off leash. Westchester park for dogs off leash is just down the street. SLO Peter Abskharon says he is going to have to start issuing citations.

Officer Peter Abskharon, senior lead officer (SLO) for Oakwood area, says he is going to have to start issuing citations to owners with dogs off leash in the Oakwood Recreation Center park area.

Officer Abskharon says he was hoping it would not come to this but…  He and the division captains have received numerous complaints from parents about dogs running off leash around in the park while their children are trying to play soccer.  They have also received complaints about dogs pooping in the Oakwood Rec park area and owners not picking it up.  Little kids play various sports in the park and running dogs and “poop” could cause an accident, not to mention poop is messy.

Update was in the park Sunday looking for poop and was not successful.  One man said that there were at least two women who consistently pick up the poop, and other people, who walk their dogs, pick up their dogs’ poop and poop from other dogs.  But even so he said he sees a lot of dog poop in the area.  “Don’t understand,” he said.  “Westminster dog park is just down the street.”

“The verbal warnings don’t seem to be working and unfortunately I am going to have to start issuing citations” wrote officer Abskharon. “I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this but parents have been complaining of dogs running around unleashed during youth soccer practice. This has the potential to become a dangerous situation and I am going to do anything I can to avoid something like that from happening (which will be citations).  We’ve also received numerous complaints of dogs off leash and owners not picking up their dog waste.”

Dee clowns around as Larry watches. Larry knows everything that is going on. He says police gave him a ticket yesterday. Asked him about the carts at the corner. He said they belong to “mother,” a woman he says is bald. Dee asked if we wanted them out of here. Yes! Dee picked up the remaining cart on the corner and brought it over before clowning around. Told the two boys neighborhood wants the area cleaned up. He said they will move on and take the carts with them, maybe move to the bus stop on Lincoln to sit. Larry was asked about the lady who walks in the middle of traffic waving hello and soliciting. Larry said she’s pregnant and on heroin, both she and guy she is with are on heroin. Larry said he gave her $10 yesterday. Then Larry went on and on about a pregnant woman on drugs or alcohol, which is obviously one of his pet peeves. Both moved peacefully with the carts and stuff that was lying on the ground.
