Okulick Provides BID Letter from Sokol with Comment

Proposed-BID-2

John Okulick of Hampton Drive has been an outspoken opponent of the Business Improvement District (BID), formed last year of commercial and industrial property owners near Ocean Front Walk to provide a “cleaner and safer boardwalk.

“The Venice Beach BID will help create a cleaner and safer boardwalk for everyone to enjoy,” said Councilman Mike Bonin. “BIDs are a commonly-used tool to help supplement public services for neighborhoods, and this BID will make it possible for us to expand the services that the neighborhood deserves. It is the kind of smart and effective public-private partnership we need.”

Okulick sent this letter to the Venice Update that was sent to him by Mark Sokol, president of BID. Okulick made the following comment with the letter:

Thought you might like to print this letter I received from Mark Sokol, self appointed Bonin representative that will recieve from the city of LA, $1.8 million dollars a year for 5 years with no benefits to the property owners or residents. This is truly a payoff to Mark Sokol who contributed $153,540.61 to Bonin from 2014 to 2016.

Swinger Praises LAPD for Action Friday

3rd

Note:  Advocate Rick Swinger, who lives in north Venice near 3rd and Rose, has just about taken over this edition of Update with his endeavors to clean up around 3rd.

By Rick Swinger

It was amazing and a relief seeing LAPD maintaining the Peace on 3rd at Rose Friday at 7:15 pm. Its been just awful with all the violence on 3rd and around this area in recent days, weeks and months.

Every Friday L.A. Sanitation cleans 3rd and the transients move ALL their baggage over to Rose Ave starting at 6 am and then all yelling, fighting, and screaming starts and lasts into the evening! Now with the combination of the hot stench of rotting perishables, rat infestations, meth use, and excrement that prevails,  residents here are fed up. Even some of the homeless are going elsewhere. Its just too crazy for everybody!

Thanks LAPD for showing up here!  Councilman Bonin please listen to your constituents! Its time to give all of us a better option to this! Designated Campsites with the infrastructure needed to provide decent relief from these Dirty Filthy streets is in order here!

Vista del Mar to go back to four lanes; Lawsuit filed to restore all lanes removed by “Safe Streets”

safestreets
Vista del Mar in Playa del Rey will return to four lanes — two southbound and two northbound. Work will start 21 August.  Lawsuit was filed Thursday by Keep LA Moving to restore all lanes removed by what Councilman Mike Bonin referred to as “Safe Streets.”

pdr

Work should take three weeks to restore the lanes southbound from Waterview Street to Imperial and northbound from Imperial to Napoleon Street. Parking on Vista del Mar will be removed. Culver Blvd eastbound was restored to two lanes in July.

Keep LA Moving, comprised of Playa del Rey and Manhattan Beach residents, claims that removal of lanes on Jefferson, Culver, Pershing, and Vista del Mar was illegal without an environmental review. They seek restoration of all lanes removed.

It is a “gross abuse of discretion” to remove lanes without outreach and examining potential adverse effects on congestion.

“A few additional things that might be relevant to the Venice reader is that Venice Blvd wasn’t even mentioned by Councilman Bonin when he addressed Vista del Mar,” said Alexis Edelstein of keeplamoving.com.  “Also Venice Blvd all the way down to the ocean and other streets like Lincoln, Sepulveda, Centinela and others are part of Mobility 2035, a citywide initiative that includes Vision Zero.

“All these streets are targeted for a variety of traffic calming measures meant to slow down drivers.”

“Another important aspect of the lawsuit is the misappropriation of Measure M funds,” said Alix Guck sky of RecallBonin.com.

The “road diets,” as generically called, have not been popular in Los Angeles. They have slowed commuter traffic wherever they have been implemented and raised the ire of the travelers.  This is the first lawsuit. It is rumored there is another one ready to be filed.

Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) says:

Occasional full street closures will occur during night hours only.

During the duration of construction, it is recommended that commuters plan ahead and look for alternate ways to travel. Alternative east/west routes are Imperial Highway and Westchester Parkway; alternative north/south routes are Pershing Drive, Lincoln and Sepulveda Boulevards, and the 405 Freeway. Beach parking is available at the beach parking lots.

Additionally, the Bureau of Engineering also has an ongoing construction project that may intermittently restrict southbound traffic to one lane daily before 3 pm.

Swinger Starts GoFundMe to Clean Up Rose & 3rd Area

Rick Swinger starts GoFundMe to clean up Rose and 3rd area.

Residents on Rose near 3rd are taking action to clean up area. They want no dumping signs at Rose and 3rd. They want the area cleaned. They have started a GoFundMe and are moving forward.

Last week a caption under this photo showed trash that was picked up by a black truck owner and carted quickly away right after photo was taken. Corner was even swept clean. That was Morales Hauling.

Update was notified that this trash that is being dumped at Rose by well-meaning grocery stores is actually being removed by local residents in vicinity of Rose. The local residents started a GoFundMe to get contributions to clean up the area. Morales with the black truck charges $150 to do a haul to the dump. What was on the corner was one haul.

These dumped boxes of food attract rats to the neighborhood. Even people who are sleeping out on Rose complain of the rats and lack of cleanup.

Rick Swinger, of north Venice, decided to do something about it. So far he has collected $280 and $150 was used for the boxes at the corner. The alley between Hampton and Rose is to be cleaned this week with a steam cleaner.

Swinger Wants Beach Street Drains Fenced With Proper Signage

Rick Swinger, resident of north Venice, wants the storm drains that outlet onto the beach to be fenced and bare signs letting all know that the water is contaminated street runoff.    It is not ocean water.

Around July, the County fills in the holes with sand.  In the meantime, beach goers, particularly children, play in the calm water, not knowing it is contaminated water, not ocean water.

When the rains come, the runoff makes a hole in the beach, and it looks like a pond formed by the ocean. Rick says that he has seen kids swim in the water.

Before the next rains come, Rick wants plans started to have these areas along the Venice beach, such as the the ones shown at Rose and Thornton,  fenced off and proper signage applied to keep people out of the water. The one on Rose is next to a playground.  He complained to the County Health Department and they gave him a sign but it quickly disappeared.

“Also Hepatitis in found at the pool at the end of our beaches storm drains where the homeless are often seen using them as their toilet.Kids are known to play in them and it just takes a small cut to be infected,” according to Rick Swinger. “Kids immune systems are just developing so this is a major threat to their health and wellness.”

Santa Monica does this as shown in the video.

Eklund Gives Cheap Way to See Eclipse; NASA to Provide Live Coverage

solar
(Map from LA Times.)

Not until, perhaps, another 90 plus years will United States citizens have the opportunity to see a total eclipse as will happen Monday, 21 August. The eclipse will traverse the 48 states.

If you cannot see the eclipse the way Bob Eklund suggests, tune into https://www.nasa.gov/eclipselive.

Bob Eklund, who writes the “Looking Up” column for Update gave the perfect recipe for anyone to see the eclipse.

Here’s a really wild idea on how to see the eclipse, with no advance planning, no hotel bill, and assurance of clear skies:

(1) Wait till the night before the eclipse and then find out which city on the eclipse path has the greatest certainty of clear skies the next day.

(2) Buy a ticket and take a late-night flight to that city.

(3) When you get there in the early-morning hours, take a cat-nap in an airport chair, then step outside the airport at eclipse time.

(4) Have a good brunch and fly back home.

Cheap, time-saving, and unforgettable memories.

Relax! There is only one this color
