Venice Art Crawl, 17 May

Venice Art Crawl will hold their second crawl of the year on Thursday May 17, 2018, 6-10 pm. Instead of having art events throughout the city, as past years, this year the VAC will focus on four specific areas, the second one being on Venice Boulevard, between Lincoln Boulevard and the beach. This stretch of Venice Boulevard is becoming known by the locals as the Arts District.

In an effort to outreach to a new generation of Venice artists, the VAC will offer free creative workshops to K-5 students from local elementary schools at the Venice-Abbot Kinney Memorial Branch Library, 501 Venice Boulevard. The Kidz Creative Camp workshops will cater to the students school hours starting at 3 pm and will promote the spirit of Venice with: painting on ceramics, storybook making, colorful chalk drawing, recycle art, and more. The workshops will be taught by Venetian artists Gary Palmer, Monica Palacios, Sandra Zebi, Cynthia Rojas and others.

Children book authors will be present sharing their stories. Actor and artist Paul Michael Glaser of popular 70’s TV show Starsky & Hutch, will read from his book Chrystallia and The Source of Light. First time authors Faye Livesey and Derek Moser will be reading from their books Fezzy The Magical Fox and Creepy Little TV Guy. Maria Emetti reads from her book Going H’om’e.

Sandra Sandia will be leading an outdoor drum circle and outside, artist Leebs will be presenting an all in-one-carnival-like bean bag ring toss game for the students–winners will receive prizes! Sandra Sandia will organize a drum circle to kick off the evening festivities at 6 pm. Close by EAT ART featuring portraits of Venice artists in their studios by photographer Debbie Zietman at Wabi-Sabi, 1635 Abbot Kinney Boulevard.

Head towards the ocean and visit the Alkaline Water Gallery, 18 North Venice Boulevard, owner Leila Levi will be showing 7 Women including Michele Pelletier, Mildred Rivera and Karen Gladstone. A skip away and you’ll find yourself at favorite beachside eatery and bar James Beach, 60 North Venice Boulevard, actor Lori Petty of Orange Is The New Black, will have her drawings on display. One block south of James Beach, visit the Sunny Bak Studio, 2214 Pacific Avenue, Monica Seggos will be presenting a performance art piece titled: The Broken Heart Repair Shop: Version One: The Doctor’s Office, giving prescriptions for your broken heart dressed in nurse attire. Come sit with Nurse Candy Frost and explore this interactive installation. Also at the studio outside in the garden, Maron Hamilton will have her fine art photography on display.

Art Crawl Announces Winners of “My Venice Holiday” Poster Contest

The Venice Art Crawl, a Venice Chamber of Commerce hosted event, is proud to announce the winners of their third annual “My Venice Holiday” Poster Contest.

The competition was especially stiff this year, according to VAC President Sunny Bak, since a record 200-plus children from local elementary schools submitted artwork for the contest.

The all-star artists, by grade, are:

Kindergarten: Rocco Bushnaq, Coeur d’Alene Elementary.

1st Grade: Rowen Killian, Walgrove Elementary.

2nd Grade: Jacob Masi, Coeur d’Alene Elementary (his third Poster Contest win).

3rd Grade: Miette Moon-Sasik, Broadway Elementary.

4th Grade: Elizabeth Martinez, Westminster Elementary.

5th Grade: Sarit Avedon, Coeur d’Alene Elementary.

The six winners will be publicly honored on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the annual Venice Sign Lighting, at the intersection of Windward Avenue and Pacific Avenue in Venice.

Their prize bags are packed with donated treats from the new Venice Ben and Jerry’s, Huzzah’s, Mittels, Burro, and the game Creature Quest, among others.

In addition, LA Unified Board Member Nick Melvoin and Assemblywoman Autumn Burke will present the children with official certificates acknowledging their participation in keeping Venice’s legacy as a thriving art colony alive.

The Venice Art Crawl, a 3-time winner of The Argonaut’s “Best Non-profit On The Westside” Award, produces pop-up parties that showcase the signature art, culture and entertainment that put this beachside community on the map. Savvy locals and visitors have made their events some of the most popular on the Westside.

The VAC has an exciting line-up planned for 2018, and is celebrating its 8th year in action by adding a few new twists. In the past, each Venice Art Crawl consisted of several events in various parts of Venice, all held on the same evening from 6-10PM.

The new format will keep the same hours but each Venice Art Crawl will be centered in one specific location, so more people can more easily see more events. The 2018 VAC Calendar is::

March 16, 2018 — Windward Avenue.

May 18, 2018 — Venice Boulevard

July 20, 2018 — Washington Boulevard.

The fourth and last VAC of 2018 will be the Venice Afterburn in September, once again on the Venice Boardwalk near the skate park. Dates TBD. Local artists, DJ’s, and performers who appear at Burning Man share their work, music, theme camps, art cars, interactive installations, etc. with their community

The Venice Art Crawl is whatever you make it: visiting an art studio, enjoying colorful projections on the sides of buildings, joining a drum circle, experiencing a live painting on a street corner, engaging in a block party, beholding a psychedelic light sculpture, meeting cool people, being a volunteer—enjoying the intersection of art and community.

The VAC mixers will happen at various sponsors locations on the third Thursdays of the months of no art crawls: January 18, February 15, June 21, August 16, October 18, November 15 and December 20. Mixers connect artists with venues and artists will have a opportunity to show their work. The January 18, 2018 mixer will be at Hama Sushi,213 Windward Ave, Veniceand there will be a $5 donation at the door.

Venice Art Crawl 18 June

ArtCrawl

Venice Art Crawl, sponsored by the Venice Chamber of Commerce, consists of many “Pop-Up” art galleries throughout Venice. Crawl starts at 6 pm. If you are interested in viewing or participating, go to Veniceartcrawl.com for details. The Art Crawl, sponsored by the Venice Chamber of Commerce is held every three months on the third Thursday of that month.

George Francisco, member of the chamber, said, “Personally, I think it would be great to have a few more sophisticated, less busy galleries on each crawl–more “neighborhoody.” The Crawl should be unpredictable in keeping with Sunny Bak’s vision for it and it should, in my mind, encompass everything from the commercial galleries to the special event street closures from time to time, to smaller, more sophisticated salon-style events to “ragers.”
