Is that place a Venice landmark?

Marilyn Roland sent the list of “Landmarks per Historic Sites Survey Report” as something she found that was interesting. It is. Look at the list. It is part of a document called Venice Community Plan that was written by the Los Angeles Planning department and published 29 September 2000.

By looking at the list one gets a better appreciation for Venice and thus a better understanding of the landmarks people in Venice want to preserve.

Both Jim Smith and Arnold Springer were contacted to find out about the document. Smith did not know but said Springer would know. Springer gave me the information that led to the document.

Several issues were listed as being community concerns. Do they sound familiar 15 years later?

!. Need to maintain the low-density character of single-family neighborhoods and protect them from incompatible uses.
    2. Preservation of residential neighborhoods and provision of more affordable housing.
    3. Lack of transition in scale, density and character of multiple-family housing and commercial uses adjacent to single-family homes.
    4. Lack of adequate parking, usable open space and recreational areas in multiple-family housing.
    5. Need to improve the visual environment of multiple-family dwellings through the development of appropriate design criteria and landscaping.
    6. Need to promote rehabilitation of residential areas and improve quality of housing in some parts of the plan area.
    7. Coordination of new development with the availability of public infrastructure.
    8. Proliferation of illegal additions of dwelling units to areas zoned for single- family use.
