Dumps Loose Shreadings in Trash

Shredder

Someone drops his shreadings into trash can and shreadings are all loose. They fly all over the Ocean Front Walk and are just about impossible to clean up. Put them in a bag and then dispose of them. Not too hard! Picture shows cleaned up version. Local merchants were notified. Monday dropper decided to dispose of them loosely in a can south of original dumping.

Mark Ryavec Lists the Victim Talley for Venice

Since August of 2014, Venice has had its number of shootings and other happenings of note. Mark Ryavec, president of Venice Stakeholders Association, has made the talley.

By Mark Ryavec
The Venice victim tally since August 2013:

Deranged transient living in his car in Venice mows down 17 pedestrians on Boardwalk with his car and kills young Italian woman in a rage over being ripped off in a drug deal gone bad.

Transient brutally assaults resident Robert DiMassa on walk street because DiMassa’s service dog urinated on the sidewalk near where the camper was sleeping.
Five home invasions – four by wasted, mentally ill transients – in a six block area centered on Windward and Riviera.

Clabe Hartley’s fingertip bitten off by transient on Washington Blvd.
Homeless Jose Gonzalez dies April 19th after suffering a blow from transient Thomas Glover on Abbot Kinney at California.

The death of transient Brendon Glenn on May 5th in altercation with LAPD on Windward.

Transient Jason Davis shot on July 14th by LAPD at Groundworks Cafe on Rose after approaching police with a knife. He later died of his wounds.

Chair hurled at restaurateur Clabe Hartley by crazed transient on August 26th. Hartley is severely concussed and requires five staples to his head.

Two transients shot on the Boardwalk at Dudley on August 30th, apparently in altercation on the sidewalk outside the Cadillac Hotel. One dies at the scene and one is transported to the hospital.

Venice Beach Use to be Poetry and Espresso

Michael Lipson brought this great article find to Update’s attention. Back in the days, Venice Boardwalk hosted poetry and espresso as the “in” thing to do. Venice West Cafe on Dudley and the Gas House on the boardwalk were the places during the late 50’s and early 60’s when Venice was the Los Angeles hub for the Beatniks.

Bike Racks Starting to Get Use

Someone is using them. Think because they are so bright, new, and attractive that people hesitate using them. They look a little fragile too but they are staked in cement. They are solid. As one man said, they will get use to using them. Oh, gosh! Another skeletal bike. Venice is home to the skeletal bike.

Parks and Sidewalk Changes Become Laws 18 July; Enforcement When?

Tent

Both ordinances dealing with Los Angeles Municipal Codes 56.11 and 63.44 were enrolled as law 15 July and will be effective 18 July, according to Mark Ryavec, president of the Venice Stakeholders Association. Ryavec got the information from the City Clerk’s office this morning.

When they will be enforceable is another story.

These are the laws Mayor Eric Garcetti said he would not sign but City Charter rules can bypass a Mayor’s signature. Mayor Garcetti also said he would not enforce such unless there were amendments to preserve prescription drugs and identification information.
Police Commission can trump Mayor’s enforcement capability.

Steve Soboroff, head of the Police Commission, indicated to Ryavec this morning that he wanted the two amendments as fast as possible so that officers can be trained with the information contained in the two amendments, regarding prescription drugs and identification information. Ryavec also said that Soboroff indicated he would honor the Mayor’s request to have the amendments first.

The ordinances deal with cleaning up the City parks and public areas, such as sidewalks, parkways, streets and alleys. The main points are:

Both ordinances change the times for notification from 72 hours to 24 hours for abandoned items. Items removed will then be stored as before.

Bulky items that will not fit into a 60-gallon garbage can be removed without notification.

Tents on park grounds will not be allowed unless a permit is obtained. Tents on sidewalks will be allowed from 9 pm to 6 am.

The “End of Watch” Memorial Wall will be on display at the big steel “V” in the heart of the Venice Beach from 3 July to 6 July. There will be a commemoration ceremony Friday, 3 July at 8 pm at the LAPD Venice Beach Police Substation, 1530 Ocean Front Walk.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League’s traveling “End of Watch” Memorial Wall is a memorial that pays tribute to the 207 LAPD officers who were killed in the line of duty.

The “End of Watch” Memorial Wall depicts all six series LAPD badges in chronological order, with the current LAPD badge in the center and the Eagle & Badge Foundation insignia on the far right. Surrounding the six badges will be the 207 names of the LAPD officers who have fallen in the line of duty.

Throughout the weekend the community will have the opportunity to meet and interact with various LAPD specialized units. Department personnel will also provide visiting community members water and juice to stay hydrated.
