Senator Ben Allen Speaks to Venice Chamber

George
Members of the Venice Chamber of Commerce with California Senator Ben Allen on the Ocean Front Walk Boardwalk after a chamber meet Wednesday. From left to right are Sandy West, board member, Carl Lambert, chamber president, California Senator Ben Allen, and George Francisco, chamber vice president.

California Senator Ben Allen spoke to members of the Venice Chamber of Commerce Wednesday at Danny’s Restaurant and said that everything in Venice is sacred and of vast historical significance … even the manhole covers that say “Made in China.” Most say India.

Vets are Getting Housed

Mayor Eric Garcetti earlier this year set a goal of 12 months to house all the street veterans. Everyone wants veterans who are on the streets of Los Angeles to be housed.

Carl Lambert, president of the Venice Chamber of Commerce, said, “the goal is more like 15 months now but groups are working together. West Los Angeles Veterans Association has opened its gates, which is symbolic of the improved attitude.”

“I was just in a meeting with US Secretary of the Veteran Affairs, Senator Ted Lieu, Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Councilman Mike Bonin and they want this to happen,” said Lambert. “Various organizations–VA, Home for Good, Hilton Foundation, to name a few, and the City are all working together to accomplish this.”

When asked how it all works, Lambert said, “For example: A vet needs housing. Someone checks him out–credit, etc., pre-qualifies him for housing, gives him a voucher and a foundation picks up the difference. Landlord has a tenant all set to go. Other services follow this vet to make sure he doesn’t fall thru the cracks but becomes a productive member of a community … Vet gets access to services, gets a job.

“It is a known fact that LA cannot build units to house these vets in a short time. LA doesn’t work that way. This is a system that works. I have put these people in my buildings.”

Venice Art Crawl 18 June

ArtCrawl

Venice Art Crawl, sponsored by the Venice Chamber of Commerce, consists of many “Pop-Up” art galleries throughout Venice. Crawl starts at 6 pm. If you are interested in viewing or participating, go to Veniceartcrawl.com for details. The Art Crawl, sponsored by the Venice Chamber of Commerce is held every three months on the third Thursday of that month.

George Francisco, member of the chamber, said, “Personally, I think it would be great to have a few more sophisticated, less busy galleries on each crawl–more “neighborhoody.” The Crawl should be unpredictable in keeping with Sunny Bak’s vision for it and it should, in my mind, encompass everything from the commercial galleries to the special event street closures from time to time, to smaller, more sophisticated salon-style events to “ragers.”

Venice Gets Lighted–O’Venice

Venice goes green! The Venice sign that hangs on Windward at Pacific got lighted and Irish embellished tonight in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Sign reads “O’Venice.” It was the first St. Patrick’s Day sign lighting ceremony.

Captain Nicole Alberca, recently appointed head of the Pacific Division, did the official switch lighting with the help of many of the local Venice activists.

The lighting ceremony was organized by the Venice Chamber of Commerce and particularly George Francisco. Ramsey Daham, local architect, made the “O'” and the switch. Bank of Venice, owned by Tom Elliott, at the corner of Windward and Main was headquarters for the ceremony.
