Campaigning Goes Big Time in Venice This Election

campaign lit

Can you top this? Look at the flyers. If you haven’t received a flyer in the mail, you do not live in Venice. And you probably have had someone knock at the door. If you want to know more about the candidates and their future thoughts for the office sought, get the Venice Update edition dated 24 May. There are banners, magnetic car stickers, slates and probably more. The Venice candidates are acting like the pros.

The following campaign literature was brought to Update’s attention. It is not in keeping with the calibre of the other literature. It implies that one will loose 50 percent in his property rights if slate promoted is not voted in. Not true but not totally untrue. The former mass, scale, and character draft from ad-hoc committee recommended a FAR of .45 to .50, which would mean that one could only build a structure 50 percent the size of the lot. Not a workable situation for small-lot Venice according to comments. That was the first draft and it is being updated. One architect recommended 1.25 FAR. These drafts have not even passed the draft stage enough to go to the Venice Neighborhood Council for acceptance. Even after that, it would be up to the City to accept such. So consider the facts. Also there is a status of the draft by Sue Kaplan, chair of the ad-hoc committee, in this Update.
