Denice and Shane live in the Pacific Palisades. They bought the house in August with a plan to completely remodel it and move in. House was vacant waiting for permits … well they thought it was. Seems Denice decided to check out the house Wednesday only to find the key didn’t work and someone had moved into her house.
To make a long story short … Some unknown person rented the Hutton’s house out to a couple with a child for $5000 cash approximately two weeks ago. Couple apparently rented the house via Craig’s List. Locks were changed, lawn was mowed, etc. House was presentable. Couple with a child moved in.
Enter Denice Wednesday. Couple is moving out. Police were called. Couple is out $5000 and must find another place.
Question is: How can tenants know the person representing himself as the owner really is the owner?
