“Thumbs Up” for Mayor Garcetti

Mayor Eric Garcetti has initiated a pilot program to clean up the streets of Los Angeles.  That was Venice’s No. 1 on the “To-Do List” for Councilman Mike Bonin last month.

Mayor Garcetti has obviously noticed that Los Angeles in certain areas is just plain “filthy.”  Venice with its tourist trade is one of the filthiest.  During the summer,  Mondays in Venice look like the day after the parade.  Residents want it cleaned.  It is not necessary to be dirty.  Venice’s tourist trade is second only to Disneyland. Disneyland is clean.

Residents in the To-Do list conducted by Update recommended that bus stops with trash should have the number of trash cans doubled.  One resident even suggested instructions for how to put trash in hole.  It is that bad.  Some areas need street sweepers more than once a week.  Some areas don’t have street sweeping and no new applications are being taken.

It is mainly the commercial areas that are tragic.  Areas emanating from the beach, such as Windward, Rose, Washington and Pacific, should be swept more than once.  In the case of Windward, the streets branching out from it should be cleaned.  Rather than put up more signs, do the even numbers two days a week; uneven numbers two days a week.

“Enlist volunteers-scouts, environment groups, clubs-to sweep/pickup the debris,” said Reta Moser.   “Carter Ave in Triangle parallels Lincoln.  It gets litter.  Not like beach area.  One resident went from one end to other and collected three bags of litter recently.  What a difference. Big thank you!

“Perhaps, Venice needs an “adopt-a-street or a block” program.  Sweepers can’t sweep if a car is parked in way.  Remember adopt a highway section?”

“Something!!!

“Residents submit to the inconvenience of the tourist trade but residents do not want to wallow in filth as the result.  Summer months are the worse.”
