“This is Our Community”–Don’t Cut Those Trees

billboard

Four to five trees on south side of Venice Blvd just west of Lincoln Blvd have been topped and trimmed. Jim Murez, better known as the Venice Blvd tree person, says it is illegal and the company should be fined. Jim claims they were trimmed so that the billboard would not have a compromised view. Years ago Murez worked to get trees on Venice Blvd and then made sure they were watered. He had a team help plant them.

By Jim Murez
The billboard company has again sawed the last several years growth of tree tops off a bunch of the trees on Venice Blvd. I’m sure there was no permit pulled. The work spans several properties all on the south side of the
street.

They did it when Bill Rosendahl was in office and were told by the city attorney this had to stop.

Is this something the council office will get involved in?

In my opinion the City needs to file legal charges and fine them to the maximum
amount allowed for each tree. They have already been warned at least twice
that I’m aware of on this one location.

LA City Street Trees is copied on this message as well.

Maybe we should start with a press conference and invite KCRW, The LA Times and
KTLA? I think I could get several of the community leaders that all help
plant them 20 years ago to let their voices be heard!

This billboard company needs to be stopped! This is our community and they
do not have the right to break the laws to serve their personal profits.

First “Last Friday” Starts Friday

Last Fridays Flyer

You’ve heard of Abbot Kinney’s First Friday. Well, this is the Last Friday and the first of the Last Fridays starts this Friday, 30 January at Danny’s, 7:30 pm at 23 Windward. It will be hosted by the Venice Symphony Orchestra conducted by Wesley Flowers.

Venice Symphony
The orchestra features brass, strings and percussion. Their repertoire encompasses all types of music.

George Francisco, a symphony booster, said Wesley fits the orchestra to the size of the room. He calls it “The Roomtone Orchestra.” “So he will have between 8-12 pieces at Danny’s and then jump down to a quartet, then probably a late night bluegrass duo,” Francisco stated. “I think he is working on a Beethoven/Ray Charles mash-up to debut. Pretty cool.”

A portion of proceeds will go to support the orchestra’s programs to give free music lessons to homeless youth and educational performances to our local public schools.

Where’s My Newspaper???–Got Coffee, Wanna Read

Rose
Rose Cafe at corner of Rose and Hampton. Argonaut and Beachhead newsstands were between phone poll and other newsstands on Rose.

By Roxanne Brown
Have you been wondering what happened to the Argonaut and Beachhead newsstands in front of the Rose Café?

About a month ago, I noticed that both the Argonaut and Beachhead newsstands in front of the Rose Café seemed to have been vandalized or run over by a car. In any event, they were destroyed. I informed both papers. The newsstands were replaced.

About a week later, I noticed that both newsstands had been pulled out again. I asked the Rose Café employees what had happened. They answered, “It was due to construction – redoing the garden in front.”

This was odd, as the LA Weekly, LA Times, Santa Monica Daily Press, and Santa Monica Mirror newsstands were still in place. The Rose Café has always been my favorite spot to pick up both publications, along with a cup of coffee and a bite to eat. I’m in there purchasing food and beverage and buying cards several times a week.

I will not patronize the Rose Cafe until both the Beachhead and the Argonaut newsstands are replaced and the newsstands are full of papers. Please join me in asking that the Rose Café restore the Argonaut and Beachhead newsstands and keep them full of papers.

You may think I’m paranoid. This may seem innocuous. This may or may not be suppression of the press. The bottom line is patrons want to read the Argonaut and The Beachhead with our cup of coffee.

Remember, the customer is always right?

Rendering Shows Neptune Marina

Layout of apartment complex.

The architects originally proposed a complex in the “Art Deco” style (1920s-30s) but now say that it will be in the “mid-Century Modern” style, i.e. 1950s-60s, because that is the period when Marina del Rey was built. The only part of the design that appears to refer to that style is the “V” shape at the corner shown above. The rest of the project is standard contemporary commercial. The structures will block views of the harbor from Via Marina, an officially designated scenic drive, with the exception of the required sliver “view corridor” at the southern end of the parcel. It will also block views of the harbor from Via Marina on Parcel FF originally slated to be an open space/ public park. TCA is also the architect of the AMLI apartment complex just to the north of the Neptune on Via Marina which will be designed in the manner of a “boat house.” When combined with the nearby Shores complex executed in the “Giant Cruise Ship” it looks like Via Marina is headed towards becoming an architectural theme park. Given that Los Angeles is known for being home to more than a dozen major architects who have made major contributions to the field, the Los Angeles County Board of “Visionaries” seem bent on promoting an ersatz and decidedly unoriginal approach to new construction in the Marina.

The group of homeless on Coeur d’Alene next to McDonald’s has dwindled from what it was. Stewart Oscars said the neighbors were working with the group. When photos were taken, there was one group on each side of road and one fellow in the alley. Apparently, fellow in alley is going to be assisted by Tomasz of People Assisting the Homeless (PATH).

Car Windows Smashed on Venice Blvd

“Four cars parked on North Venice Blvd between Grand Blvd and Abbot Kinney Blvd were vandalized by someone taking a large object and smashing all windowshields on driver’s side,” reported Pamela Bower.

“None were broken into and burglarized. They just made a 15-inch round crack/indention in each. Broad daylight.”

Will Sims, owner of the Mercedes pictured, said they had been waiting for police for two hours. Two of the four cars had been towed. Only the two pictured remained. “We just got thru to the police and they said they could not make it and that I should bring it to police station to make a complaint.”

“Whoever did it targeted new, nice expensive cars so it was obviously a hate crime/act of anger” wrote Mark Ryavec. “They skipped other older cars parked along the same street.”

Google Removes Tree Supports

Google Trees

By Jim Murez
For the past several years the trees that surround the 340 Main St, the
Gehry Binoculars building, have been getting strangled by steel guard rails
that were installed when the trees were mere saplings. The purpose of the
rails was to provide support and protection to the trees when they were
young (nearly 20 years ago).

Last year members of the community and the Venice Neighborhood Council meet
with Google who is the current tenant of the property. One of the items
discussed was the fact that the City Street Trees that surround the site had
been neglected for far too long. The steel frames were cutting into the
trees and doing damage to the trunks. As a result staff members of Google
committed to see what they could do to get the problem resolved.

Tonight while I was walking past these trees on Mail Street, I observed the
steel frames that have been strangling the trees like a girdle does to a
woman had been removed. The trees can now start their recovery process! .

Hooray, what a great way to start the new year!

I hope the VNC sends a message to Google and their staff for being
responsible neighbors and showing they care for our community. And, I want
to personally say I appreciate the follow through – thanks!

It was brought to Update’s attention by an anonymous commentator that the encampment on Venice Blvd, west of Abbot Kinney, next to the Friday Farmers’ Market is growing and the smell of urine prevails.

An anonymous commentator said the encampment “consists of at least 14 or more people sleeping in this area every night and it’s becoming a problem. The smell of urine is pungent.

“The campers are sleeping right on the sidewalk causing pedestrians to step over them. It’s very sad.”

Michael Nelson, member of the Venice Neighborhood Council Neighborhood Committee for that area, said “I am trying to work with the local police of the Pacific Division. I really feel sorry for the homeless and do what I can to help them whenever I can, but this is really a quality of life issue for the neighborhood that needs to be addressed.”

Contact Venice Update if your neighborhood has a growing encampment area. Update is aware of the Ocean Front Walk and 3rd Avenue encampments.
